Unity and the Asamoah Doctrine

A generation ago when I was in boarding school I witnessed a scene that impacted me immensely and still guides me to this day.

It was lunch time. Right after lessons had adjoured for the day. As my fellow students and I approached the dining hall, we were suddenly overran by other students who were writing their final papers. Their mission? Take the dining hall. Objective? Raid as many tables of the food served for students – 12 per table.

Then something extraordinary happened. The dining hall master was then in the adjoining kitchen with the school’s matron and other kitchen staff. Hearing the commotion he proceeded to the main hall and what he did was the not only amazing but also a masterclass in composure, focus and purpose.

Whilst the unruly students poured into the hall and milled about the tables emptying as many pots and pans served for all students the dining hall master hurriedly rushed against the tide  towards the doors of the dining hall with the swagger and skill of a dolphin, swimming swiftly past the raiders until he got to the doors and then secured it. Some had inevitably gotten away with their loot but a sizeable number remained trapped in. Cue your prayers for the raiders. Given Presbyterian tradition…the rest was rather painful history!

My fellow juniors and I looked in awe and dumbstruck as all of this unfolded. The sheer fearlessness with which the master had shut down the operation with utmost calm was just remarkable. Do not misunderstand me he was apoplectic but he was controlled. He was big and burly but anyone else could have been intimated by the horde!

In summary the salient points of that event were thus:
Stem the damage
Assess the damage
Reconcile with any consequences
Quickly reengage for life must carry on!

The Asamoah Doctrine was born.

Nevertheless  the Reverend Emmanuel Asamoah’s courage and resolve could not have achieved sanity without the help of the kitchen staff in not only containing the situation by securing the hall but also to provide a quick solution to the problem of feeding those whose tables had been raided. Unity is the underpinning of the doctrine.

In today’s world families and marriages are buffeted from many different angles with the net result of great strain, heartache and unprecedented breakups. Whether we desire them or not trials will come. Sometimes these trials ultimately yield a positive result. Trials test us. They are like a refiner’s fire: improving us by removing the impurities in our lives, help build our character and give us hope.  Romans 5:1-5

Likewise when a nation is in flux and seemingly inundated with problems right, left and centre, very often there is one only option: to carry on. This cannot happen in division. Only unity will help a nation progress. Unity is vital, no, it is critical.

The consequences of failure are always catastrophic and regrettable especially for the poor, needy and vulnerable.

When the Pharisees wickedly and jealously accused Jesus of using evil to heal the demon-possessed person, He responded with only the wisdom that only the Son of God can.

“But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” – Matthew 12:22

It goes without saying that we have seen this played out endlessly in our families, places of work and nations. The reason is quite simple, the one who hates all mankind, that great liar aka the devil, effectively uses the weapon of division to prevent  our growth and victory in all aspects of life. In fact, the weapon of divide and conquer (rule) has been used by many princes throughout history. It no doubt will continue to be used until the end of time.

Without unity of purpose in a marriage, family, organisation or community, storms and trials will also have a devastating effect. Indeed in unity there is strength.

The key to overcoming our predisposition to being divided is choosing to trust in God our maker AND resting in Him. Paul exhorts us boldly approach the throne of God where we can find mercy and help in times of need. Hebrews 4: 16

May we always seek unity in all we do and remain united as we fight the goliaths of strife, poverty and disease in our world, in Jesus name.

If you haven’t as yet accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Saviour and will like to do so then pray this short prayer wherever you are.

Dear Heavenly Father

I confess I do not know you and because I cannot see you, or touch you, it is difficult for me to believe you are there.
Yet I am willing to trust you.
I confess I am a sinner and have done many things I know are wrong.
But I am asking you today to forgive me of all those sins and make me a new person.
Create within me a clean heart and fill me with your love.
I cast all my cares and burdens onto you and I chose to live for you.
I thank you for hearing my prayer and coming into my life.
I thank you for restoring me and making me whole again.
I thank you for the new life you have given me through Jesus Christ your only begotten Son and now my Lord and Saviour.

Amen
